Here is a triptych that was started a year ago and finally got finished about last week. The drawings are stream of consciousness because I made up the scenes as I went. The intention behind them is to show two isolated views of a world contained in a border of scrollwork that was inspired by baroque cartouches and those crazy gaudy mirrors in Viennese palaces. As always, links for larger views follow.
Below the Bark
This portrays a tree of significance and the halls that lie underground beneath it. The two views are separated by a flower.
Decoration for a Book
The title of this part refers to the original intent of these drawings. This was the picture I first drew, and I initially thought it could be the heading for a chapter in a book. As the idea for the triptych grew, the drawing became less of an ornament and more independent. It shows two towers (heh), one on top of a cliff and one beneath it, down a flight of stairs. These views are separated by flowers and some sort of smug entity. Interpret as you will.
Seen from the Tower and the Sea
My sister-in-law gets credit for helping me come up with this one. She said I already did one about earth and one about sky, so naturally water should follow. This was the last drawing I completed over the summer. It shows a ship seen from the window of a tower, and that tower seen from the deck of the ship, separated by some rigging and a porthole, which shows a rising sun.
enjoy!
